Reaching the Russian-speaking market with Yandex Direct and VK Ads
In Russia, advertising has two main channels: Yandex Direct for search results and the content network, and VK Ads for social networks. Because users in Russia cannot be reached with Google and Meta ads, the advertising plan for this market is built on these two platforms. In this guide we explain how both platforms work, how measurement is set up and the rules specific to this market.
- 01
The short answer
If you sell a product or service that people search for, start with Yandex Direct search ads. For a product whose demand you have to create, or for a specific audience, VK Ads is the better fit. Most businesses use both: Yandex meets existing demand, while VK reaches new audiences and reminds past site visitors.

How Yandex Direct works
Yandex Direct ads appear in Yandex search results and on sites and apps in the Yandex Advertising Network. The keyword structure, ad copy and sitelinks are built with a logic similar to Google Ads, but Russian inflections and word forms affect matching, so the negative keyword list has to be prepared carefully. Automated bidding strategies work towards the goals defined in Yandex Metrica.

How VK Ads works
VK Ads appear on platforms in the VK ecosystem, such as VKontakte and Odnoklassniki, and on partner sites. Targeting uses age, location and interests, and audiences built from site visitors and customer lists. Image, short video and lead form ads are available; with a lead form ad, the enquiry is collected without the person leaving for your site.

Measurement: Yandex Metrica and VK Pixel
In Yandex Direct, conversions are measured with Yandex Metrica goals; events such as form submissions, phone calls and purchases should be defined as goals. In VK Ads the same job is done by the VK Pixel. These tags should depend on cookie consent, and the processing of personal data should be set up in line with the target country's law. Without measurement, automated bidding strategies cannot work properly.

Ad labelling and rules
In Russia, registering and labelling online ads (маркировка, erid) has been mandatory since 2022. Yandex Direct and VK Ads handle this registration with their own tools; the advertiser's details must be entered correctly. On top of that, both platforms' advertising policies and category-specific restrictions apply.
- 06
Accounts, payment and language
Ad accounts are opened in the advertiser's name and spend is paid directly to the platform; the management fee is a separate item. For foreign companies, account opening and payment conditions vary by platform and country, and this step should be settled before the campaign plan. Having the ad copy and the landing page in the audience's language directly affects the results.

How we work at Doki
We set up and manage Yandex Direct and VK Ads campaigns: keyword and audience plan, ad copy and visuals, Metrica and pixel measurement and a monthly report. The ad accounts are opened in your name and Doki works with admin access; ad visuals and copy are included in the management fee. Calls are held in Turkish; correspondence and deliverables run in the language you prefer, with translation support. We make no promises about results; every month we report where the spend went and what it brought.
