SEO or Google Ads?
Short answer: Google Ads brings traffic today but the traffic stops the moment the budget stops; SEO takes months to deliver but the effort accumulates like an asset. Google Ads for fast results and measurable tests, SEO for long-term visibility without a cost per click. For most businesses the most efficient path is to use both together so that they feed each other.
| Criterion | SEO | Google Ads |
|---|---|---|
| Time to results | Usually months; depends on competition, the site's history and content quality. | Traffic can start the day the campaign is approved. |
| Cost structure | Content, technical work and time; no fee per click. | Payment for every click; costs are high for competitive keywords. |
| Durability | Rankings earned continue for a while even if work slows down; content accumulates. | Visibility stops when the budget stops. |
| Control | Rankings and appearance are the search engine's decision; algorithm updates can affect them. | Full control over keywords, text, budget, time and location. |
| Perceived trust | Organic results look more trustworthy to many users. | Carries a “Sponsored” label; works well with people ready to buy. |
| Best use | Long-term visibility, informational searches, brand authority. | New sites, campaigns and seasons, keyword tests, fast demand. |

Rented traffic and owned traffic
Google Ads is like renting traffic: you are visible as long as you pay, and the shop window closes when payment stops. SEO is like owned traffic: good content and a solid technical foundation keep bringing visitors months and years after publication. This does not mean SEO is free; it requires investment in content, technical improvements and time. The difference is that the spending goes not per click but into an asset that gains value as it accumulates.

When should Google Ads come first?
If the site has just launched and does not yet appear in search, if there is a short campaign or season, or if you want to learn quickly which keywords bring sales, Google Ads is a sensible start. Ad data shows which searches really convert; this information is the most valuable input for the SEO content plan. But treating ads as a permanent solution means paying the cost again every month.

When should SEO come first?
In industries where the cost per click is very high, in services where users research for a long time before deciding, and in topics with many informational searches, SEO's return is higher. A site whose technical issues are fixed and whose content truly answers questions gradually reduces the budget needed for ads. SEO results are measured in months, so starting early is the biggest advantage.

How do they work together?
The most efficient setup feeds ad data into SEO and SEO content into ads. Permanent content is written for keywords that convert in ads; for searches where you rank well organically the ad budget can be reduced and shifted to keywords where organic visibility is weak. If competitors advertise on your brand name, running a brand campaign may also make sense. Tracking both channels in the same measurement setup, with the same conversion definitions, makes the comparison fair.

Notes by country
In Turkey and Europe, most searches happen on Google; SEO and Google Ads are planned together. In Russia, Yandex is a strong search engine and Yandex Direct is used on the paid side; Google stopped serving ads in Russia in March 2022. On multilingual sites, searches in each language should be researched separately: the same product is searched with different words in different languages, and competition levels also vary by country.

Doki's impartial note
The question “SEO or ads” is often the wrong question. If you need sales in the short term, start with ads but lay the foundation for SEO from day one; postponing SEO means a larger ad budget every month. If the budget is very limited, first strengthen the site's technical foundation and content for the few most-searched questions. We can work out together which balance suits you by looking at your industry's click costs and your site's current state.
