Sitemap
A file that gives search engines a list of the site's published pages; it makes pages easier to find, but does not on its own get them indexed.
- 01
Why it matters
A sitemap gives search engines the list of pages you have published and when they last changed. It helps new pages get found faster, especially on large or new sites or those with weak internal linking. It should list only canonical, working addresses you want indexed.
- 02
Example
A shop adds new products every day, but they reach search results late. Once the sitemap updates automatically with real modification dates and is submitted in Search Console, new products are found sooner.
- 03
Common mistake
Stamping today's date on every page in each build, or leaving redirected and deleted addresses in the sitemap. Unreliable dates get ignored, and broken addresses waste crawling.
