Crawling
Search engine bots visiting pages by following links and downloading their content; it is the step before indexing.
- 01
Why it matters
A page that cannot be crawled cannot be indexed. If the crawler cannot see the page, for example because the content appears only after sign-in or loads late through scripts, it does not appear in search either. Server errors, blocking rules and slow responses hold back crawling.
- 02
Example
A site's product descriptions load only after clicking a “show more” button. Once the descriptions are included in the page's initial HTML, Google starts seeing the text on product pages.
- 03
Common mistake
Loading important content only through user interaction. Crawlers do not click buttons; content that needs to be seen should be ready when the page opens.
