Canonical URL
A tag that tells search engines which address is the main one when the same content is available at more than one address.
- 01
Why it matters
When the same content opens at several addresses, for example with filter or campaign parameters, the search engine has to choose which one to show. The canonical tag states your preferred address, and link value and ranking signals gather there. Google treats the tag as a strong hint, not a binding command.
- 02
Example
A product page opens both under a category address and at its own product address. Once both pages carry a canonical tag pointing to the product address, Google shows a single address in search and the two no longer compete.
- 03
Common mistake
Pointing every page's canonical to the home page, or making the canonical a redirected or noindexed page. Such conflicting signals make Google ignore the tag and choose the wrong address.
