Scalability
A system's ability to handle growing users, data or transaction load without a serious drop in performance and without costs rising disproportionately.
- 01
Why it matters
A system that crashes during a campaign, TV advertising or seasonal peak closes its doors at the very moment it could sell the most. Scalability should be considered from the start: caching, database indexes, background jobs and a structure that can grow horizontally are much cheaper than adding them later.
- 02
Example
Before a sale day, an e-commerce site runs a load test. At ten times normal traffic the checkout step slows down; once post-payment e-mail sending is moved to the background, the bottleneck disappears.
- 03
Common mistake
Building the most complex scaling setup before there is any need for it or, conversely, never running a load test when growth is expected.
