Database
A structured data store in which data is kept in an organised, searchable and consistent way and which applications read from and write to.
- 01
Why it matters
Orders, customers, products and user accounts live in the database; a well-designed structure determines the application's speed and the consistency of the data. The database is also attackers' main target: access permissions, encryption and regular, tested backups are essential.
- 02
Example
A shop's order page slows down. Investigation shows there is no index on the frequently queried customer and date fields; once an index is added, the page opens in milliseconds instead of seconds.
- 03
Common mistake
Leaving the database directly exposed to the internet, or letting the application connect with a full administrator account. A single flaw puts all the data at risk.
