Caching
Storing a copy of frequently requested data or pages in the browser, on the server or in a content delivery network so it can be served quickly without being rebuilt.
- 01
Why it matters
A well-built cache reduces server load, opens pages instantly and keeps the site up during sudden traffic spikes. Files that do not change are cached for a long time, frequently changing pages for a short time. Adding a version to file names prevents an old copy of an updated file from being used.
- 02
Example
On a campaign day a shop's traffic increases tenfold. Because category pages are cached for one minute, the server does not get overloaded and the site does not slow down.
- 03
Common mistake
Putting personal pages such as basket, account and checkout in a shared cache. This can lead to one customer's details being shown to another.
