01 / Glossary
GraphQL
An API query language in which the client defines exactly the data it needs in a single query and receives only that.
- 01
Why it matters
GraphQL lets mobile apps and complex screens get the data they need in one request instead of several, without carrying unnecessary data. In return, caching, authorisation and limiting query cost need more care than with REST.
- 02
Example
A mobile app's product screen used to send four separate requests for the product, stock, reviews and similar products; after switching to GraphQL it gets them all in one query and the screen opens faster.
- 03
Common mistake
Not limiting query depth and complexity. A malicious or faulty query can overload the server on its own.
