REST API
A widely used API design style in which data is accessed through addresses using standard HTTP methods (GET, POST, PUT, DELETE).
- 01
Why it matters
Because REST is easy to understand and supported by almost every programming language and service, it is the most common choice for integrations. In a well-designed REST API, addresses are consistent, error codes are meaningful, documentation is current and version changes do not break existing users.
- 02
Example
A shop's API uses GET /orders for the order list and POST /orders for a new order. The accounting software pulls new orders from these addresses every night.
- 03
Common mistake
Returning a 200 status code even when there is an error. The integrating party cannot notice the error and data is silently lost.
