Design system
A shared design language in which colours, typefaces, spacing and components such as buttons and forms are gathered in one source together with their rules and ready-made code.
- 01
Why it matters
A design system makes screens look consistent, lets new pages be built quickly and ensures accessibility rules are applied everywhere. A fix to one component is reflected across the whole product. Its benefit grows as the product and team grow.
- 02
Example
A company builds a shared design system for its website, customer panel and mobile app. When the brand colour changes, a single value is updated and all three products are refreshed at once.
- 03
Common mistake
Leaving the design system as just a visual guideline document. Rules not connected to code stop being followed over time and the product becomes inconsistent again.
