Web Content Accessibility Guidelines
WCAG · The international guidelines published by the W3C so that websites can be used by everyone, including people with disabilities, with three conformance levels: A, AA and AAA.
- 01
Why it matters
For screen reader users, keyboard users, people who cannot distinguish colours and older users, accessibility means being able to use the site at all. In the European Union, accessibility obligations for certain products and services, including e-commerce, have applied since June 2025, and the benchmark is usually WCAG level AA.
- 02
Example
The fields on a shop's checkout form are labelled only with grey placeholder text. A screen reader cannot tell what the fields are; once visible labels are added and error messages are tied to their fields, the form becomes usable for everyone.
- 03
Common mistake
Measuring accessibility only with an automated tool, or believing an accessibility overlay widget solves it. Automated tools find only part of the problems; manual testing with a keyboard and a screen reader is needed.
