01 / Glossary
Responsive design
Designing a page so that its layout automatically adapts to different screen sizes such as phones, tablets and computers.
- 01
Why it matters
On many sites most visitors arrive on their phones, and Google evaluates sites primarily by their mobile version. Tiny text, overflowing tables and buttons too small to tap on a phone both lose sales and hurt accessibility.
- 02
Example
On a clinic's site, the booking form has two columns on desktop; on a phone it collapses into one column, the buttons get bigger and the phone number becomes callable with a single tap.
- 03
Common mistake
Approving the design only on desktop and leaving the mobile view to the last minute. When mobile is squeezed in afterwards, content and buttons become hard to use.
