Average order value
AOV · The average amount per order, found by dividing total order revenue over a period by the number of orders.
- 01
Why it matters
Raising average order value grows revenue without winning new customers, and each order's fixed costs, such as shipping and packing, are better covered. Free shipping thresholds, bundles and complementary product suggestions directly affect it.
- 02
Example
A shop's average order value is 420 and its free shipping threshold is 300. Once the threshold is raised to 500 and complementary product suggestions are added to the basket, average order value rises to 530.
- 03
Common mistake
Pushing customers towards unnecessary products to raise the average. Irrelevant suggestions and constant pop-ups lower the conversion rate.
