01 / Glossary
Cross-selling
Offering the customer other products that are used with or complement the product they want to buy.
- 01
Why it matters
Well-matched suggestions make the customer's life easier and increase order value: suggesting a memory card to someone buying a camera, or a case with a phone. Basing suggestions on real purchase-together data is far more effective than showing random products.
- 02
Example
A stationery shop adds the pencil case and water bottle most often bought together to its school bag page; sales of these products rise markedly during the school season.
- 03
Common mistake
Showing long suggestion lists at checkout. Distracting at the last step delays completing the order; suggestions fit better on the product and basket pages.
