Staging environment
A separate copy environment in which changes are tried under conditions as close as possible to the live system before going to production.
- 01
Why it matters
Changes made directly on the live system mean customers are the first to hit errors. A staging environment lets updates, plugins and migrations be tried safely. It must, however, be closed to search engines and password-protected, and real personal data should be masked.
- 02
Example
A shop first tries a major plugin update in the staging environment. A bug appears in the cart calculation; after it is fixed, the update goes live and customers see no disruption.
- 03
Common mistake
Leaving the staging environment public and open to indexing. Duplicate content shows up in search and real customer data can be left unprotected.
