Sender Policy Framework
SPF · A DNS record that lists which servers may send e-mail on behalf of a domain; the receiving server compares incoming mail with this list.
- 01
Why it matters
Without SPF anyone can send e-mail with your domain and recipients cannot tell the difference. A correct record helps fake mail land in spam or be rejected and protects the delivery rate of your own messages. There must be a single record, and its DNS lookups must not exceed 10.
- 02
Example
A company sends e-mail both from its own mail server and through a newsletter service. Because only the mail server is listed in the SPF record, newsletters land in spam; once the newsletter service is added to the record, the problem is solved.
- 03
Common mistake
Adding a second SPF record for every new service. With two records SPF fails entirely; all services must be combined in a single record.
