Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting and Conformance

DMARC · A DNS record that tells receivers what to do with e-mail failing SPF and DKIM checks (monitor, send to spam, reject) and has reports sent to you.

  1. 01

    Why it matters

SPF and DKIM alone do not stop fake e-mail; without DMARC the receiver does not know what to do. Major mailbox providers expect DMARC from bulk-sending domains. Reports let you see who sends mail with your domain, and the policy is tightened step by step.

  2. 02

    Example

A company first collects reports with p=none and notices that its invoicing service sends unsigned mail. After the service is fixed, the policy moves to quarantine, then a few weeks later to reject, and fake invoices stop reaching recipients.

  3. 03

    Common mistake

Jumping straight to reject without reading the reports, or staying at none for years. The first loses legitimate e-mail; the second provides no protection.
