Phishing
An attempt to trick someone into handing over a password, card details or a payment approval through a fake e-mail, message or page.
- 01
Why it matters
Phishing targets people's trust instead of a technical flaw, so it can work even against well-protected companies. Fake invoices, delivery notices or an urgent payment request that seems to come from a manager are the most common forms. Staff awareness, multi-factor authentication and e-mail records that make spoofing your domain harder work best together.
- 02
Example
The accounts team receives an e-mail in the managing director's name, but from a different address, saying a payment must be made to this account today. The employee calls the director to check before paying and spots the fraud.
- 03
Common mistake
Training staff once and closing the topic, or punishing an employee who clicked. A team that hides clicks out of fear delays detection; making reporting easy works better.
