Stock keeping unit
SKU · A unique code given to each variant of a product, such as colour and size, to tell it apart in stock and across systems.
- 01
Why it matters
Stock codes are the shared language for stock counts, order picking, marketplace and accounting integrations. If each variant does not have its own code, the wrong product gets shipped, stock numbers do not add up and returns get mixed up. Assigning codes by a meaningful, consistent rule makes work easier.
- 02
Example
A clothing shop defines each T-shirt model with separate codes by colour and size, such as TS-102-BLACK-M. Because the marketplace and warehouse use the same code, stock is deducted correctly on both channels.
- 03
Common mistake
Giving the same code to different products or changing codes over time. Past orders and reports end up linked to the wrong products.
