Marketplace
An online shopping site where many sellers list their products on the same platform and sales are made through it, usually in return for a commission.
- 01
Why it matters
Marketplaces offer ready traffic and trust and can speed up first sales for a new brand. On the other hand, commissions squeeze margins, the customer relationship and data largely stay with the platform, and price competition is intense. Many businesses use marketplaces alongside their own store, as a complementary channel.
- 02
Example
A handmade products brand starts selling on a marketplace, then adds a discount code for its own site to every package. Some repeat customers start buying from its own site, with no commission.
- 03
Common mistake
Making all sales depend on a single marketplace. A change in commission or rules, or a suspended account, can stop the business in a day.
