Serverless architecture
An architecture in which application code runs on a cloud provider only when invoked, without server management, and is billed per use.
- 01
Why it matters
In a serverless setup, setting up, updating and scaling servers become the provider's job; it grows automatically with irregular, sudden traffic, and cost is close to zero when idle. In return, latency on the first invocation, execution time limits and dependence on the provider must be considered.
- 02
Example
A site's contact form and free tools run as serverless functions. Used a few times a day, they cost almost nothing; when thousands of requests arrive during a campaign, they scale on their own.
- 03
Common mistake
Not setting usage limits and cost alerts. A looping bug or abuse can turn into a large bill without anyone noticing.
