Microservices architecture
An architecture in which an application is split into small services that can each be developed and released separately and talk to each other through APIs.
- 01
Why it matters
Microservices let large teams work independently and scale only the part under load. But the complexity of a distributed system, meaning network failures, data consistency and monitoring needs, is often greater than the gain for small teams.
- 02
Example
A large e-commerce platform separates its payment, search and recommendation services. During a campaign only the search service is scaled up, and an update to the payment service is released without affecting the others.
- 03
Common mistake
Starting with microservices while the product and team are still small. For most projects, a well-organised single application is faster to develop and easier to run.
