Webhook
A callback mechanism that automatically sends a notification to another system when a specific event happens in one system, for example when a payment is received.
- 01
Why it matters
A webhook lets a system be notified the moment an event happens instead of constantly asking “is there anything new”; it is faster and saves resources. Payment confirmations, order statuses and form submissions are common uses. The incoming notification must be verified with a signature to confirm it really came from the sending system.
- 02
Example
When a payment is completed, the payment provider sends a webhook to the shop's server. The shop verifies the signature, confirms the order and sends the customer a confirmation e-mail.
- 03
Common mistake
Accepting webhooks without verifying the signature. Anyone could send a fake “payment received” notification to that address and create free orders.
