Nofollow link
A marker added to a link that suggests to search engines not to trust it or pass link value through it; there are also sponsored for paid links and ugc for user-generated content.
- 01
Why it matters
Marking links that are paid, based on mutual agreements or added by users is what Google's rules require. Correct marking keeps your site from looking like it sells links or opens the door to spam. Google treats these markers as hints, not binding commands.
- 02
Example
On a forum, links shared by members are automatically marked ugc and nofollow, so the forum loses its appeal for people who want to drop spam links.
- 03
Common mistake
Making internal links to your own pages nofollow. This disrupts crawling and the flow of page value; internal links should be left normal.
