The e-commerce platform defines how the shop runs day to day: adding products, stock, payments, shipping, promotions and reports. Ready-made subscription systems offer a fast start and low initial cost; custom software gives flexibility for unusual business rules and growth. A wrong choice can lead to an expensive migration within a few years.

A wholesaler that offers its dealers different price lists and deferred payment can only partly set up these rules on a ready-made shop system, using add-ons. After moving to a platform designed for wholesale, orders are processed without manual corrections.

Common mistake
Choosing a platform by the first year's monthly fee alone. If commissions, add-on fees, integrations and the cost of moving later are not counted, the cheap-looking option can turn out the most expensive.
