Long-tail keyword
Longer, more specific phrases that are searched little individually but make up a large share of searches in total.
- 01
Why it matters
Competition on long-tail phrases is low and what the searcher wants is clearer, so conversion rates are usually high. New sites and small businesses can gain visibility through these phrases instead of competing with large sites on generic terms. Guides and forum topics that answer questions naturally capture these searches.
- 02
Example
Instead of “shoes”, the search “orthopaedic women's trainers for wide feet” is made only a few hundred times a month, but visitors arriving through it buy at a much higher rate than those from the generic search.
- 03
Common mistake
Producing a separate, nearly identical page for every long-tail phrase. This creates thin content; similar phrases should be answered on one comprehensive page.
