Search volume
An estimated value showing how many times a phrase is searched in a given region over a given period, usually as a monthly average.

Why it matters
Search volume shows how much demand a topic has and helps set content priorities. The numbers tools give are estimates, though, and can differ significantly from tool to tool. Volume should be weighed together with intent, competition and business value, not on its own.
- 02
Example
Of two phrases, one is searched 10,000 times a month and the other 300. The high-volume phrase brings people looking for general information, the low-volume one people ready to buy a service; the agency prepares a page for the low-volume phrase first.
- 03
Common mistake
Targeting only the most searched phrases. Competition there is high and intent scattered; what brings a business customers is often less-searched, specific phrases.
