Lazy loading

Not loading images and elements in parts of the page that are off screen until the user approaches that part.

  1. 01

    Why it matters

On long pages, loading every image up front both slows the opening and wastes mobile data. Lazy loading makes the first visible area arrive faster. Thanks to built-in browser support, it can often be applied with a single attribute.

  2. 02

    Example

On a category page with hundreds of product images, only the first row loads immediately; the rest arrive as the user scrolls. The page's initial download size drops to a quarter.

  3. 03

    Common mistake

Lazy-loading the main image in the first visible area too. This makes the main content load later; lazy loading should be applied only to elements below the fold.
