Image optimisation
Turning images into smaller files without visibly reducing quality and serving them at the right size and in modern formats.
- 01
Why it matters
Images are the largest part of the data downloaded on most pages. Formats such as WebP and AVIF, versions sized for the screen and proper compression make pages noticeably faster. Giving images dimensions improves layout stability, and descriptive alt text improves accessibility.
- 02
Example
The banner image on a site's home page is 4,000 pixels wide and 3 MB in size. Served in three sizes by screen width and as WebP, the download on mobile devices drops to 150 KB.
- 03
Common mistake
Only displaying a large image smaller on the page. The browser still downloads the full-size file; the image should be prepared at the size it will be shown.
