Embedding
A method of representing the meaning of data such as text or images as a vector of numbers; content with similar meaning gets vectors that are close to each other.
- 01
Why it matters
Embeddings make it possible to find content with similar meaning even when the words are not identical. Semantic search, recommendation systems and finding relevant documents in retrieval-augmented generation rely on this method. Result quality depends on how content is split up and on keeping the vectors up to date.
- 02
Example
On a shop's site, a visitor searching for “sports shoes” sees running and walking shoes in the results even though those words do not appear in the product names.
- 03
Common mistake
Not refreshing the vectors when content changes. Search keeps showing deleted products or outdated content.
