Transferring data from an old system to a new one, for example from one e-commerce platform to another, while converting its structure and verifying it.

Why it matters
However good the new system is, the business stops if customer, order, product and content data are moved incompletely or corrupted. A successful migration needs a trial transfer first, comparison of record counts and sample records, redirects for old addresses and a rollback plan.

Example
When changing platforms, a shop first does a trial transfer and notices that the variants of 140 out of 12,000 products are missing. The problem is fixed, the real migration is done overnight and old product addresses are redirected to the new ones.

Common mistake
Doing the migration in one go, without a trial and without redirecting old addresses. Both data loss and a sudden drop in search rankings can follow.
