Container
A lightweight virtualisation unit that packages an application together with the libraries and settings it needs and runs it the same way in every environment.
- 01
Why it matters
It largely removes the “it worked on my computer” problem: the developer, test and production environments run the same package. Containers start much faster than virtual machines and use fewer resources. The software inside the package must still be kept up to date and scanned for security issues.
- 02
Example
A team packages its application as a container. A new developer runs the project on their computer with a single command, and the same package is released to production unchanged after being tried on the test server.
- 03
Common mistake
Building the container image once and not updating it for months. The old libraries inside keep carrying known security vulnerabilities.
