Kubernetes
An open-source orchestration system that automatically manages distributing, scaling and restarting large numbers of containers across servers when they fail.
- 01
Why it matters
Managing hundreds of containers by hand is impossible; Kubernetes restarts a crashed component, adds copies when load rises and rolls out updates without downtime. It is powerful but complex: for small projects, the setup and operating burden can outweigh the benefit.
- 02
Example
On a food ordering platform, the number of copies of the order service automatically rises from three to nine at lunchtime and drops back to three when the rush is over. When a server fails, its containers are moved to other servers.
- 03
Common mistake
Setting up Kubernetes for a simple site with a few components. Managed hosting or a serverless setup could do the same job with far less effort.
