Language version tag
hreflang · A tag that tells search engines about a page's other language and region versions, helping visitors see the page in their own language.
- 01
Why it matters
On sites published in several languages or for several countries, hreflang tells the search engine which page belongs to which audience. A user in Germany then sees the German page and a user in Turkey the Turkish one. The tags must be reciprocal: every version should point to the others and list itself as well.
- 02
Example
A site's English page outranks its Turkish page in searches in Turkey. Once every language version carries hreflang tags pointing to the others, plus an x-default for unmatched languages, results start showing the page in the right language.
- 03
Common mistake
Using one-way tags or wrong language codes. A tag without a return link is ignored, and an invalid code such as “en-UK” does nothing; the correct one is “en-GB”.
