Wix or WordPress?

Short answer: if you want to build a site of a few pages yourself, without technical knowledge and without worrying about hosting, Wix is practical. If you expect the site to grow, need various integrations or may want to move it to another server later, WordPress is a more flexible and portable foundation. The most important difference: a Wix site cannot be moved off Wix, while a WordPress site can be moved anywhere.

  1. 01

The balance between convenience and freedom

Wix offers everything in one package: the editor, hosting, security certificate and updates are on the platform, and you only edit content and design. The price of this convenience is staying within the limits Wix offers. With WordPress there are almost no limits: you have full control over themes, plugins, server and code, but that freedom requires you or a maintenance team to take on updates, backups and security. The choice depends on how much you want to deal with the site and how much it will grow.

  2. 02

    Why does portability matter?

According to Wix's own help pages, Wix sites run only on Wix servers and cannot be transferred to another server or platform; if you want to change platforms, you need to rebuild the site on the new system. In addition, an existing site's template cannot be switched; a new site is created for a new design and the content is moved. With WordPress, the files and database can be moved to any hosting, and content stays in place when the theme changes. For a business thinking long term, this difference determines the cost of any future migration.

  3. 03

Is there a difference for SEO?

On both platforms you can configure the SEO basics such as titles, descriptions, URL structure, redirects and sitemaps; on a small site, content quality determines rankings more than the platform. The difference appears with advanced needs: multilingual setups, custom structured data, server-level speed improvements and large content archives are managed more flexibly on WordPress. On WordPress, too, many plugins can slow the site down, so speed should be monitored regularly.

  4. 04

    How should you compare costs?

On Wix, the cost consists of the chosen plan's monthly or annual fee and add-on apps; hosting and the security certificate are included in the package. The WordPress software is free, but hosting, domain, any paid themes and plugins and ongoing maintenance effort are added. For a small, stable site, Wix's total cost is predictable; for a growing site, WordPress's flexibility can turn into a cost advantage. Always check current prices on the providers' official pages.

  5. 05

WordPress.com and WordPress.org are not the same

The WordPress in this comparison is the open-source WordPress installed on hosting of your choice (WordPress.org). WordPress.com offers the same software as a hosted service, and depending on the plan, features such as installing plugins and themes may be limited. The portability and full-control advantages apply most to WordPress on your own hosting. Clarify which one is meant when you get a quote.

    Doki's impartial note

For a site of a few pages that you will manage yourself and that is not expected to grow, Wix is a reasonable and practical choice; such a project may not even need an agency. If the site will be an important sales or content channel for your business, and will need multiple languages, integrations and SEO work, choosing WordPress or a custom build from the start prevents the cost of rebuilding later.
