Virtual private server
VPS · A server created by dividing a physical server through virtualisation, with its own operating system and dedicated resources.
- 01
Why it matters
A virtual server offers more control and predictable performance than shared hosting and is much cheaper than a physical server. But updating the operating system, security settings and backups are the user's responsibility. An unmanaged virtual server quickly becomes a security risk.
- 02
Example
An agency hosts client sites on a virtual server; updates are applied automatically, unnecessary ports are closed and a backup is taken to another location every night.
- 03
Common mistake
Setting up the server and not updating it for years. An unpatched operating system and services are the easiest target for automated attacks.
