Push notification
A short message an app or site sends to the user's device even when they are not using it at that moment; current devices and browsers require the user's permission.
- 01
Why it matters
A relevant notification sent at the right time is one of the fastest ways to bring a user back: an order status, an appointment reminder, a price drop. Unnecessary and frequent notifications, on the other hand, lead users to turn notifications off or even delete the app.
- 02
Example
A hairdresser's app sends a reminder notification the day before an appointment, and the booking can be cancelled or rescheduled from the notification with a single tap. The number of no-shows falls.
- 03
Common mistake
Asking for notification permission the moment the app first opens, before the user understands why they should allow it. A refused permission is very hard to win back later.
