Malware
Any software written to harm a device or system, steal data or take control without permission: viruses, trojans, spyware and ransomware.
- 01
Why it matters
Malware often runs silently: it records passwords, steals card details or uses the device for further attacks. It can arrive through a fake attachment, pirated software or a compromised website. Up-to-date systems, installing only from official sources and endpoint protection reduce the risk considerably.
- 02
Example
An employee opens an e-mail attachment called “invoice”; it installs software that collects passwords saved in the browser. A few days later the company's accounting account is accessed from another country.
- 03
Common mistake
Relying on antivirus alone. New or targeted malware can slip past signature-based protection; updates, restricted permissions and behaviour monitoring are needed together.
