Keyword cannibalisation

Several pages on the same site targeting the same search phrase and replacing each other in the results, so that none of them ranks strongly.

  1. 01

    Why it matters

When Google cannot decide which of several pages answering the same question to show, rankings fluctuate and link value is split between the pages. The problem usually builds up as similar posts accumulate over time. Merging the pages or giving each a different purpose solves it.

  2. 02

    Example

A blog has three “what is SEO” posts written in different years, and all three come and go in the rankings. Once the most recent one is expanded and the other two are redirected to it, the single page settles on the first page.

  3. 03

    Common mistake

Covering the same topic again with a new post in every content calendar. Updating the existing page is usually more effective than opening a new competing page.
