Headless commerce

An architecture in which the back-end functions of an e-commerce platform (products, basket, payment) are offered through an API and the storefront interface is developed independently.

  1. 01

    Why it matters

A headless setup provides custom design, high speed and the flexibility to serve different channels such as web, app and kiosk from the same platform. In return, development and maintenance costs are markedly higher than a store with a ready-made theme. It therefore usually makes sense for large brands with special needs.

  2. 02

    Example

A fashion brand uses a ready-made platform for products and payments but develops its storefront separately with its own design. The same platform also serves the mobile app and in-store screens.

  3. 03

    Common mistake

Choosing a headless architecture for a small shop just because it is fashionable. For a simple shop the added complexity costs more than the benefit it brings.
