Encryption
Turning data into a form that only holders of the right key can read; it can be applied both in transit and at rest.
- 01
Why it matters
A stolen laptop, a leaked backup or a captured database does far less harm if the data is encrypted and the key is protected separately. That makes encryption a basic measure for both security and data protection law. The hard part is managing the keys securely.
- 02
Example
Disk encryption is turned on for the sales team's laptops. When one laptop is left on a train, the customer list on it cannot be read; the company wipes the device remotely and records the incident.
- 03
Common mistake
Storing the encryption key next to the encrypted data, for example in plain text on the same server. If the key is taken together with the data, encryption provides no protection.
