Encrypted connection
SSL/TLS · The protocol that encrypts traffic between the browser and the server; https in the address bar shows that the connection is encrypted, not that the site itself is secure.
- 01
Why it matters
An encrypted connection stops data between the visitor and the server being read or changed on the way. Browsers mark unencrypted pages as not secure; encryption is a must for forms, sign-ins and payments. If the certificate expires or its chain is incomplete, visitors see a warning and most of them leave.
- 02
Example
A site's certificate expires on a Saturday and nobody notices. Until Monday visitors are met with a browser warning and sales stop. Automatic renewal and a check that watches the expiry date prevent this.
- 03
Common mistake
Taking the padlock in the address bar to mean the site is safe. Encryption only protects data in transit; it says nothing about flaws on the site, fake sites or weaknesses on the server.
