Domain name
A memorable internet name such as example.com, rented for a set period, used to reach a website and e-mail addresses.
- 01
Why it matters
A domain name is the brand's digital identity; letting it expire means the site and e-mail suddenly stop and the name may even be taken by someone else. The domain should be registered in the company's name, auto-renewal should be on and the management account should be protected with two-step verification.
- 02
Example
A business's domain name is registered to the personal account of the freelancer who built the site years ago. Because renewal e-mails go to them, it expires; the site and e-mail are down for a week until the name is recovered.
- 03
Common mistake
Registering the domain name in the agency's or an employee's personal account. When that person leaves or cannot be reached, the company loses control of its domain.
