Single sign-on
SSO · A method that lets users access several applications by signing in once with a single account, with authentication handled by a central provider.
- 01
Why it matters
Single sign-on removes the need for staff to keep a separate password for every application and makes it possible to enforce multi-factor authentication in one place. All access for a leaver can be removed by disabling a single account. Because the hub is critical, protecting those accounts is especially important.
- 02
Example
A company connects its e-mail, document, project and accounting apps to single sign-on. When an employee leaves, IT disables one account and access to all five apps ends at the same time.
- 03
Common mistake
Setting up single sign-on but leaving old local passwords active in some apps. Attackers use these forgotten local sign-ins; paths that bypass the hub should be closed.
