Shrinking HTML, CSS and JavaScript files by removing spaces, comments and unnecessary characters without changing how they work.

Why it matters
Minification and compression let the same code download with less data, which is noticeable especially on slow mobile connections. Modern build tools do it automatically. The bigger gain, though, comes from not sending unused code at all and loading code only on the pages that need it.

Example
A site's script file shrinks from 900 KB to 250 KB through minification and compression; once the part used only in the admin panel is moved into a separate file, the code visitors download drops to 120 KB.

Common mistake
Minifying but continuing to load dozens of unused libraries on the page. Unneeded code is still unneeded when minified.
