Managed detection and response
MDR · A service model in which detection and response tools are monitored continuously on your behalf by the provider's expert team, which also responds when an incident happens.
- 01
Why it matters
Buying security tools is easy; building a team that watches alerts day and night and interprets them correctly is hard for small and mid-sized businesses. MDR provides that expertise as a service: alerts are investigated, real threats are acted on and you receive a report explaining what happened.
- 02
Example
At the weekend an unusual administrator session opens on a server. The MDR team investigates the alert, ends the session, locks the account and sends the company a summary on Monday morning explaining what happened and what to do next.
- 03
Common mistake
Not spelling out response authority and response times in the contract. If the provider has no authority to isolate a device or disable an account, and does not know whom to call, critical minutes are lost.
