First contentful paint
FCP · The moment the first text or image appears on screen after the page starts loading.
- 01
Why it matters
The first content is the first sign to visitors that the page is loading; someone staring at a blank screen for long may leave. Server response, render-blocking style and script files and how fonts load determine this time. Google considers 1.8 seconds or less good.
- 02
Example
A site waits for five separate style files and a font at the start. Once the critical styles are inlined and the font is set to show immediately with a fallback, the first content appears a second earlier.
- 03
Common mistake
Showing only a loading animation to speed up first content. If the real content arrives late, the animation hides the problem but does not change when the main content loads.
