Distributed denial-of-service attack
DDoS · An attack that aims to make a site or service unable to respond by flooding it with traffic sent from many devices at once.
- 01
Why it matters
DDoS does not steal data, but it stops the service: a shop that is unreachable on a campaign day or a booking system that goes down is a direct loss of revenue. Sometimes it is used to cover another attack or to demand a ransom. A content delivery network and provider-level protection absorb the traffic before it reaches the server.
- 02
Example
On the morning of a big sale, a shop's site slows down and stops under fake requests from thousands of addresses. Once traffic is routed through a protection service, the fake requests are filtered out and the site opens to real visitors again.
- 03
Common mistake
Looking for protection only after the attack starts. Setting it up on an unprepared site can take hours; protection and an emergency plan should be ready, especially before busy periods.
