3D Secure
3DS · A security step in online card payments that verifies the cardholder's identity, usually with a one-time code sent by the bank or approval in a mobile app.
- 01
Why it matters
3D Secure makes fraudulent purchases with stolen card details harder and, for authenticated payments, shifts much of the fraud liability to the bank. In Turkey it is used in most online card payments. Its current version can authenticate low-risk transactions without burdening the user with an extra step.
- 02
Example
Someone tries to place an order on a shop with stolen card details; because the bank sends the verification code to the real cardholder's phone, the payment cannot be completed.
- 03
Common mistake
Turning off 3D Secure to make selling easier. With unauthenticated payments, the chargeback cost of fraudulent transactions stays with the business.
